Language Development Tutor - Hiawatha Academies - Northrop

Many students in Minnesota need extra help developing strong foundational language skills and you can make all the difference. Take action as a tutor and join a team dedicated to helping all students succeed.  

As an English Language Tutor, you’ll be placed at a local school where you’ll help students in middle school to improve their academic English language skills and gain confidence. Every day, you’ll meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide extra practice and build skills.  

With great training and on-site coaching, we’ll prepare you to help students succeed. Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and in the after-school program. Tutors are needed for the entire school year. We are currently recruiting tutors for the 2023-24 school year, with opportunities beginning in July.  

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Language Corps. You will join an amazing group of members, determined to help students succeed. 

• Use proven strategies to help Long-Term English Learner students build their skills and confidence.  
• Collaborate with coaches and teachers to monitor student progress and see what’s working. 
• Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software. 
• Commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development. 
• Lead after school enrichment classes focused on hands-on learning and social emotional development. 
• Support families with engaging in their student’s learning at school. 
• Represent Language Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness. 

Serve as a tutor 35 hours per week and you’ll receive a perks package that includes: 

• A stipend of $900 paid every 2 weeks 
  • $20,700 total for 1200 hours of service starting in July 2023 
• Up to $4,546 for tuition or student loans* 
• Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment 
• Individual health insurance — Monthly premium 100% covered 
• Child care assistance — Based on family size and income 

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ at the start of their service term may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child or stepchild. 

Language Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to take action for kids – and meet the following minimum qualifications. By the time they begin their service, our tutors are: 

• Dependable and have a history of good attendance 
• Able to understand and follow instructions 
• Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students 
• Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)  
• Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing  
• 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent 
• A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States* 
• Able to successfully complete a background check 

We also prefer our tutors have: 

• Experience working with youth or English Language Learning 
• Somali, Spanish, Oromo, or Hmong language skills 

Language Corps is powered by AmeriCorps members who serve as tutors. Launched in 2022, Language Corps helps middle school English Language Learners thrive in school. 

Language Corps is an Ampact educational program that is administered through a formal partnership with ServeMinnesota and fueled by research from the National Science + Service Collaborative. As a national organization, Ampact demonstrates the power of national service to solve complex social problems by creating innovative programs that focus on the key areas of education, environmental stewardship, and healthy futures for communities.
